PM Specialization
Technical Product Manager (TPM): Role, Skills, Compensation
Technical PM is a specialization for platform, infra, dev tools, and API products. Higher technical bar, similar comp, different day-to-day. This guide covers the role and skill requirements.
What Makes a PM Role "Technical"
Signals
- Customer is a developer or engineer
- Product surface includes APIs, SDKs, CLI, or dev tools
- Design decisions involve architectural tradeoffs
- You work on platform vs application product
Skills That Matter
Technical depth
- Read code fluently (Python, Go, or whatever your stack uses)
- Understand system design tradeoffs (latency, availability, cost)
- API design fluency (REST, GraphQL, gRPC)
- SQL beyond basics — window functions, query optimization
Compensation
TPM comp vs general PM
- Broadly similar to general PM at same level
- At companies where 'TPM' is a distinct ladder (e.g., Google), often 5-10% higher
- At infra/dev-tools companies (Stripe, HashiCorp, Cloudflare, Snowflake), TPM is the default and pays at PM tier
Where TPM Roles Are Most Common

- Amazon (heavy TPM culture)
- Stripe (default PM archetype)
